Twelve Days

Costa Rica

CR9041 Apr 02, 2019 to Apr 13, 2019

Day 1 San Jose, Costa Rica
Transfer to and from Pearson International Airport are included, which provides the convenience of leaving your car parked safely at home. From Pearson our group will fly to the capital city of Costa Rica, San Jose, with our Hanover Holidays’ Tour Director. Upon arrival the waiting motor coach will take us to the beautiful Crowne Plaza Corobici, located close to beautiful La Sabana Metropolitan Park and the Museum of Costa Rican Art. This very well appointed hotel offers two dining options, a Lobby Bar, outdoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, beauty parlor and even a Casino for evening entertainment.

Day 2 San Jose, Costa Rica
Breakfast is included each day of your tour. Then we begin to explore the central valley region, where San Jose is located. This is a lush and soil rich region where you will find the largest amount of Costa Rican agriculture. First, we visit the Doka Coffee Estate, close to the Poas Volcano. A local guide shows the process this family has employed for more than 70 years of Coffee Production. The next visit is a Dairy Farm, where the tour begins with a tractor and wagon ride around the farm which offers some amazing views of the rural landscape. The tour continues through the milking parlour, often the most popular portion of the tour. You will have your first visit to a tropical cloud forest before visiting a hydroponic strawberry plantation, where you even get to taste this wonderful fruit! We return to the Crowne Plaza hotel for overnight. (B,L)

Day 3 Tortuguero National Park
Breakfast will be after we depart the hotel this morning at edge of Braulio Carrillo National Park. Travelling through this region we often see Banana and Pineapple Plantations. From the Cano Blanco pier, we board a motor boat to travel the inland waterway as there are no roads into Tortuguero National Park. The sights during this excursion are amazing and you will want to keep your camera close to hand. We arrive in the Town of Tortuguero and check in at the eco-friendly Pachira Lodge. This beautiful Lodge features 88 rooms appointed with bamboo furniture and ceiling fans. There is also a restaurant, bar & turtle shaped swimming pool on this beautiful property. Lunch is included before we stroll into Town with a local guide for a closer look at this unique village. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax poolside before our included Dinner this evening. ** (B,L,D)

Day 4 Tortuguero National Park
We begin our day with a stroll along some of the trails close to our resort. Our guide will be pointing out wildlife and vegetation that is significant to the region. Then we board smaller canal boats, with a guide on each boat to provide a commentary of the incredible habitat you will be cruising through. Among the wild-life you may encounter are three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced), three-toed sloths, river otters, caimans, iguanas, river turtles, basilisk lizards, poison dart frogs, as well as more than 320 species of birds including all six species of kingfishers found in the new world, three species of toucans, eight species of parrots, and other neotropical species such as the Slaty-tailed Trogon, White-collared Manakin and Purple-throated Fruitcrow. The boats are small without a canopy which provides a better view into the tree tops. (B,L,D)

Day 5 Arenal
From the Lodge shared boat transfer that will take us back down the inland waterway to meet the waiting motor coach. Lunch will be included in El Ceibo at a private restaurant before arriving in the Arenal region. Famous for the active Volcano of the same name, the Volcano has entered a quiet period and is not having visible lava eruptions at the present time, the area has become a beloved destination because of the great number of nature related and adventure activities. Here our guide will explain the different types of volcanos as well discuss some of the other active volcanos located across Costa Rica. There will be some time to relax at the Arenal Manoa, our accommodations for the next two nights. While each room boasts a beautiful view of the Volcano, the property also offers two swimming pools, jacuzzi, bar and a guest Laundry. (B,L)

Day 6 Arenal & Tabacon Hot Springs
Just a short drive we will arrive to the Danaus Ecocenter, which is a small Biological Reserve that develops conservation programs. Our tour guide will escort you on a soft walk for about 1 hour through trails in the secondary forest, where you can see in its natural habitat a wide variety of plants and animals. One of the main attractions of the place is the butterfly farm, with a special site for the display of larvae, pupae and eggs. It is a special place to observe birds, especially waterfowl, caimans, iguanas and basilisks. After this we will have a short walk to explore the small town La Fortuna where we will have lunch.
A wonderful experience this afternoon when we visit Tabacon Hot Springs. Here you can indulge yourself in the perfect combination of volume, temperature and mineral content that is present in Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort and is unique to Costa Rica. Water flows by gravity throughout the property, forming in-river pools, waterfalls, and cascades and filling in the pools throughout the resort. You are free to move from pool to pool and then relax in each station for your own amount of time. We will also be enjoying a delightful dinner here at the Tabacon Spa before returning to overnight. (B,D)

Day 7 Monteverde
Today begins with a boat ride across Arenal Lake, offering tremendous views of the Volcano, making our way to Chiquito River. From here we board a bus and ride to the higher elevations of Monteverde! The Monteverde Cloudforest Preserve traverses the Tilarán Mountain Range. First we check into our accommodations the El Establo Hotel, a larger property with two indoor pools, a spa, two restaurants, bars, tennis court, basketball court, hiking trails and more. In the early evening you will begin your Wildlife Observation hike, which also provides tremendous views of the sunset. This is one of the best tours in Monteverde to see wildlife. The idea is to be in the forest at sunset when some of the wildlife is very active before going to sleep and some of the night wildlife is starting their activities for the evening. The most common animals you might see are sloths, coatimundis, agoutis, porcupines, gray fox, tarantulas, frogs, some species of insects and some species of nocturnal birds. (B,D)

Day 8 Monteverde Biological Reserve
A very unique experience today as we visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here we meet a local guide who takes us on a slow paced hike to explore the natural history – the birds, insects and mammals that you may spot at any time during the hike. The Reserve is a 5,000 hectare wildlife sanctuary featuring unique geographic and topographic terrain and along with various climatic conditions has lead to a high level of biodiversity. In the afternoon we board the Sky Tram gondolas that rise smoothly through the rain forest and offer endless views as you ascend to a wide observation platform where our guide can point out unique features of the flora and fauna that can be seen. There will time back at the hotel to freshen up before the included Dinner! (B,D)

Day 9 Manuel Antonio
There will be wide ranging gorgeous views during our drive today, as we head towards the central Pacific Coastal region. Often during this drive we will encounter large crocodiles lying in along the river banks of the Tarcoles River. After the included lunch we continue to the Hotel Rancho Casa Grande, on the edge of Manuel Antonio Park for overnight! There will be plenty of time to stroll some of the walking trails from the hotel or simply enjoy the amenities of the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 10 Manuel Antonio
A visit to Manuel Antonio National Park is always a huge highlight of this tour as the exuberant tropical vegetation protects of the most impressive white sand beaches of the Central Pacific Coast. We set sail on a Catamaran Sailboat where we hope to spot Dolphins, Whales or Sea Turtles just off the beaches of Manuel Antonio. Time to swim, snorkel and enjoy a gourmet grilled Lunch today! (B,L)

Day 11 San Jose
A casual morning as we return to Manuel Antonio Park for some time to look around. Then we board the motor coach to make our way back to the Central Valley. We will again be staying at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Resort and a farewell Dinner will be included. (B,D)
